A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
Oh wow. I expected it to be bad, as bad as F1: The Movie. Which was one of the worst things I watched so far. Surely, the worst thing I watched this year.
Turned out, that was pretty good. It’s almost dialogues, the entire film. And you have to actually listen to them and process them. It’s not boring, and the style is excellent too.
It’s one of the best films we watched this year, for sure.
Also, reminded me this film with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story (2019).
Probably I need to give that one a rewatch, so I could add it to my library here. Or, I might dig some previous notes of mine.
Both were unexpected for me. I knew nothing about them, before I watched them. So had very little expectations. Yet, this time I had some expectations. I expected it to be like Fountain of Youth. Which was just mediocre.
Also, I expected a harsh end. At least on par with Marriage Story or La La Land (another masterpiece of my collection). However, a happy ending is not what I expected. Don’t forget to watch the final titles, otherwise you’re missing out on the story.
I expected Sophie to be a lunatic, who could just stab the protagonist for no real reason. Life, you know. Yet, they decided to make it a romantic story.
When we watched it halfway, and stopped yesterday’s evening, I was thinking whether to name it a masterpiece. But when we finished the whole thing, I have no doubts. As with the main thing they translate in the movie: when it’s love, you have no doubts.
I won’t say the actors pick is ideal. Chris Evans is too handsome for this role, and he looks too good for a loser. He speaks too intelligently for a loser. He might be a very temporary loser, after all. Find a better job, better roles, etc. I guess, that might be his best real role so far, same to the role of Adam Driver in Marriage Story. Seeing Adam Driver only in Star Wars, I would never recognise him as a great actor he is. (Same was with Scarlett Johansson.) Both triggered this ‘oh no, Captain America as the main character, oh, that would be a very bad thing!’ And I’m happy I was so wrong! It’s good. Great even. It’s a solid work.
Making this story too real won’t help either. So it checks all the boxes, as they say. It’s 10/10 in all departments. Super stylish in every frame, and even the titles are good. A unicorn.
So. Definitely, I will recommend. A masterpiece. That’s my cup of tea, just the two hours of dialogues. Stylish everything. Not too banal of story (a bit banal in hindsight, but it’s not so obvious when you watch it for the very first time).
